Mary Simon
RESILIENCE COACH AND LIFE COACH
Hi, I’m Mary Simon, and it’s my life’s work to help you live your best life. I’ve always had a passion for self-help books, psychology, and trying to understand how people work. After getting my BA in psychology, I was privileged to spend a number of years as a Counselor at McLean Hospital’s OCD Institute, working with people with OCD and OCD-spectrum disorders.
OCD and anxiety can be devastating. Working with people as they bravely confronted their OCD (and related disorders) was incredibly inspiring. My time there was part of what inspired me to work with people who are sensitive, prone to overthinking, or who struggle with perfectionism.
I live in Massachusetts and enjoy making art, listening to audiobooks, gardening, hiking, and camping with my husband, 2 children, and dog in my spare time.
My Journey
I didn’t become a coach because life has always been easy for me, or because I believe I have all the answers. I became a coach because I’ve struggled.
I’m not naturally thick-skinned or endlessly steady. I’m sensitive — meaning I feel things deeply and respond strongly to my environment. That sensitivity has shaped my life in profound ways. It allows me to care deeply about others and move through the world with empathy. But it can also lead to overwhelm, overthinking, and perfectionism.
For a long time, I believed resilience was something other people just had — a certain toughness people were born with. I’ve since learned something different.
Over time, I’ve developed the skills to calm my nervous system when I feel overwhelmed. I’ve learned how to interrupt spirals of overthinking and take meaningful action anyway. I’ve practiced embracing “done is better than perfect.” Through my own difficulties, I’ve learned a lot about what it means to be a resilient human.
My struggles didn’t disappear. But they transformed me and inspired me to help other people move through life’s challenges in the same way. This transformation is also what led me to pursue formal training in coaching and to support others who feel deeply, think deeply, and want to build strength without losing their sensitivity.
I believe resilience isn’t something you either have or don’t have. It’s something you build — with insight, practical skills, and consistent practice.
Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, discouraged, or simply ready to grow into a steadier version of yourself, I’m here to help you build resilience in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.
Why I Chose the Name Blue Fern Coaching
The name Blue Fern Coaching reflects what I value most as a resilience and life coach—and what I want my clients to experience as they grow. Ferns are one of my favorite plants. They remind me of the beautiful forest trails I love exploring with my family. Walking through a trail lined with ferns feels almost magical, and that sense of discovery mirrors the coaching journey.
Ferns are delicate and sensitive, yet incredibly resilient—ancient plants that have survived since the age of the dinosaurs. They represent the same qualities I believe exist within every person: strength, adaptability, and an innate ability to grow through adversity. This resilience is at the heart of my coaching philosophy.
The word “Blue” in Blue Fern Coaching symbolizes serenity, clarity, and grounding. Blue also brings to mind the ever-changing nature of water—fluid, constantly moving, and always evolving. Just like water, we are meant to shift, change, and continue moving forward. My coaching supports clients as they navigate these natural transitions in life with calm and confidence.
My Coaching Approach
As a resilience-focused life coach, my work is grounded in:
- Positive psychology, which focuses on strengths, well-being, and what helps people thrive
- Humanistic psychology, which honors empathy, compassion, and the belief that every person is capable of growth
- Cognitive behavioral coaching, which helps clients understand and shift unhelpful thought patterns so they can take meaningful action
- Acceptance and Commitment coaching, which helps clients live according to their values even in the face of distressing thoughts and emotions.
This integrated approach helps clients gain clarity, build confidence, deepen self-awareness, and create lasting change.
Why I Love Being a Resilience Coach
Resilience coaching is not just my profession—it’s my passion and my calling. I absolutely love witnessing those moments when something “clicks” for a client. It’s inspiring to watch someone walk into a session with doubt or overwhelm and leave feeling clearer, lighter, and more capable.
I’m energized by:
- Seeing clients have powerful aha moments
- Helping someone achieve a goal they once felt stuck with
- Guiding people toward meaning, fulfillment, and direction
- Watching clients uncover strengths they didn’t know they had
- Supporting personal transformation in real time
As a resilience-focused life coach, I’m deeply committed to creating a warm, supportive space where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered to move forward. Whether someone is seeking clarity, building confidence, navigating a transition, or simply wanting to feel less stuck, I’m here to help them grow.
